We are a group of students from Victoria School, and we are doing this blog for a CME project on Global Mindedness.
Through this project, we hope to reach out to people in the world and promote the word about global mindedness.

With global-mindedness being one of the core values of the school, Victorians should be more concerned about how they can contribute to the construction of a global-minded society. Besides students in our school, we hope to reach out to others in the world and spread this message to them about global-mindedness. This ensures that they will be more exposed to the culture and ideas of people from different backgrounds and origins.

Young People (teenagers) of the current and future generations
Reason: With globalization becoming of greater importance in the world and taking place at an exponential rate, the earth is undergoing "spatial shrinking", therefore it is important to make sure the younger generation is well informed about the current affairs of the world. Thus, they will be able to adapt more easily to the modern working society when they grow up and join the workforce.

Attracting Foreign Talent:
Scholarships:
Singapore offers scholarships and upgrading courses to elite students from other countries like India, China and ASEAN member countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia. For example, Singapore has provided technical training to 1700 officials from Laos since 1993. Singapore also offers scholarships to students of ASEAN countries under the Singapore Cooperation Programme. The Scholars who study in Singapore will spread information about their homeland, and thus allowing Singaporean students to learn and understand more about foreign countries and vice-versa.
Youth Olympic Games:
By hosting the Youth Olympic Games in 2010, participants aged 14 to 18, from many different countries will get to visit our clean, green, beautiful, serene, politically stable, peaceful and lively country. Thus the young generation will be able to discover the way of life of the people and culture throughout the duration of their participation in the games.
Venturing Abroad:
Setting up of Industrial Parks:
Singapore sets up industrial parks in hosts countries such as China. This allows Singaporeans who work with these countries to interact and communicate more with foreigners. Thus, they will share information about their own country and culture. Therefore, setting up of industrial parks contribute to a global-minded nation as it allows the people to learn more about the way of life of the locals from other countries.
Scholarships:
The government also offers scholarships to students who do well academically in their countries. This enables students to venture overseas to further their studies. In the process, they acquire new acquaintance with locals in the country or with scholars from other countries. By studying and working together in the same environment, Singaporean students will be able to broaden their minds about the culture and customs of other countries.
Relationships with the world:
Diplomatic Relations:
Diplomatic relations are integral to the success of our growing nation. These healthy relationships are forged with other countries by various means such as nurturing and sustaining cultural, economic and political ties with them. These cultural, economic and political ties help cultivate a global-minded society. For example, cultural ties aid Singapore in becoming a multi-racial and ethnic society, making our culture highly diversified. People from all over the globe visit and even migrate and reside in Singapore. Economic relations help boost our economy by giving us more trade opportunities and sharing of novel technology. Political ties is the connecting bridge for countries to
interact and get connected to the outside world.
Bilateral and Multi-lateral ties:
Singapore has bilateral and multi-lateral military agreements and exercises with various countries to allow Singapore troops to train in their countries. Some examples of these countries that have established bilateral military agreements with us are France, Australia, New Zealand and India. Besides that, Singapore is also involved in multi-lateral military agreements and exercises with other countries. One such example is the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) which was established in 1971. The member countries are Singapore, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The five nations conduct exercises each year to enhance their cooperation and coordination. In the event of an external threat any of the member countries, members would consult one another on the appropriate measures to be taken to deter the aggressor. With all the interaction of various leaders belonging to different countries, globalization takes place at an accelerated pace without us actually noticing it consciously.

Foreign Exchange Programmes with Overseas Institutions:
As part of Singapore's efforts to contribute to globalization and nurturing a global-minded society, the educational institutes in Singapore, be it Primary Schools, Secondary Schools or Tertiary Institutions, conducts or participates in foreign exchange programmes. These exchange programmes usually involves countries within our region such as Malaysia and Thailand, and sometimes also involve students and educators from regions far away such as the UK and the USA. These study exchange programmes permit students and educators of both participating countries to work with and interact with each other, and in the process, learn about each other's way of life, culture, as well as learning from each other's education system, improving the education in both countries. These exchanges also help in promoting Singapore, a small nation, to the world, bestowing us with more opportunities to cooperate and work with each other, following the trend of globalization.

Increasing Awareness of foreign culture through media:
Documentaries or television programs related to foreign cultures can be shown more often. As the television is a media that is widely used, by showing documentaries on it would be able to disseminate the information about other countries to many Singaporeans. This will allow a large fraction of the population to learn about the way of life of other countries.

Teach more about the culture of other countries during Civil and Moral Education lessons:
By teaching about the customs and beliefs of other people from different countries, Singaporean will be more open-minded about the religions and practices of people of other races. With this, they would be willing to accept others with open arms and not discriminate others due to lack of exposure and na?ve thinking. These would contribute to students having the correct mindset to welcome globalization.
Encourage the foreign scholars in the school to interact more with the local students:
By interacting with the local students, the foreign scholars will be able to share their own culture and experiences in their homeland. At the same time, the foreign students would learn about the various aspects of Singapore and increase their awareness about Singaporean culture. Furthermore, the school could get the foreign students to give presentations about their culture and homeland during special events such as racial harmony day. The scholars could also make known their national day to the school and give detail about what is done on that day.
